A stern warning from Anne Applebaum in The Altantic: democracies have to work harder to defend themselves. If they don’t, the forces of autocracy will destroy them. Ukraine is teaching us a valuable lesson: it is showing us how to have both patriotism and liberal values.

Applebaum is a Polish-American journalist and historian. She has written extensively about Marxism–Leninism and the development of civil society in Central and Eastern Europe. In 2012 she visited the John Adams to discuss her book Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe.
