On November 25, the Erasmus Prize 2015 -that is awarded annually to a person or institution that has made an exceptional contribution to culture, society or social science, in Europe and beyond- will be awarded to Wikipedia at Paradiso. Wikipedia receives the prize because it has promoted the dissemination of knowledge through a comprehensive and universally accessible encyclopedia. To achieve that, the initiators of Wikipedia have designed a new and effective democratic platform. The prize specifically recognizes Wikipedia as a community — a shared project that involves tens of thousands of volunteers around the world who help shape this initiative. Jimmy Wales co-founder of Wikipedia, will receive the price. Wales already received the Swiss Gottlieb-Duttweiler prize in 2011 and was included in the Internet Hall of Fame in 2013.
